TUP Unveils One Hundred Years Without Solitude: Yang Huanyi and Nüshu at Tsinghua University Anniversary
April 26, 2025, Beijing--As part of Tsinghua University’s 114th anniversary celebrations, the Exhibition of Endangered Scripts of Southwest China opened at the Li Wenzheng Library (North Building), featuring the release of One Hundred Years Without Solitude: Yang Huanyi and Nüshu(Female’s Script) by Professor ZHAO Liming, Director of the Tsinghua University Research Center for Endangered Scripts of Southwest China. The book, published by Tsinghua University Press (TUP), was unveiled by SHI Lei, Associate General Editor of TUP.

Renowned scholars delivered keynote speeches, including DONG Zhiqiao, Vice President of China Association for Exegesis Studies and Distinguished Professor at Nanjing Normal University’s School of Chinese Language and Literature; HUANG Tianshu, Professor at Tsinghua University’s Research and Conservation Center for Excavated Texts; AN Caidan, Researcher at the China Tibetology Research Center (CTRC); SUN Yuwen, Professor at Peking University’s Department of Chinese Language and Literature; Tsering Thar, former Dean of the School of Tibetan Studies at Minzu University of China; and WANG Jianli, Professor at the Communication University of China.
Professor ZHENG Xiaoyun, Director of the Institute of World Religions at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, highlighted the global reach of Professor Zhao Liming’s work. In his concluding remarks, Professor HUANG Dekuan, President of the Chinese Script Society and Director of Tsinghua University’s Research and Conservation Center for Excavated Texts, emphasized the dual mission of preserving and revitalizing these scripts while nurturing future scholars.
Precious manuscripts including works in the Shui script, Nüshu (Female’s script), and Dongba script, were donated to the Tsinghua University Library, the Tsinghua University School of Humanities, and Tsinghua University Press by representatives from Sandu Shui Autonomous County (Guizhou), the Dongba Culture Research Institute of Lijiang City (Yunnan), the Jiangyong County Nüshu Museum in Yongzhou City (Hunan), the Yuhua Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum (Hunan), and the Wuxi Yongming Nüshu Research Center (Jiangsu).
The exhibition was co-organized by the Tsinghua University Library and School of Humanities, with support from Research Center for Endangered Cultures of Southwest China and the Intangible Cultural Heritage Project Development Department of the Guojie Research Institute. Over 60 guests attended the event, including scholars from universities across the country, inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, local government representatives, and media representatives.
Among the attendees were CHEN Junming, Vice Chairman of the Diqing Prefecture Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) in Yunnan Province; ZHANG Jinsheng, former Vice Chairman of the Longnan Municipal CPPCC Committee in Gansu Province; YANG Kai, County Magistrate of Sandu Shui Autonomous County in Guizhou Province; JIANG Jianping, Deputy County Mayor of Jiangyong County in Hunan Province; FU Zhixia, Deputy Director of the Guojie Institute of Science and Technology Consulting and Development for Senior Professors; FENG Jintao, Secretary of the CPC Committee of the Tsinghua University Library; and SHI Lei, Associate General Editor of Tsinghua University Press.
The opening ceremony was presided over by WEI Chengguang, Deputy Director of the Tsinghua University Library.
