To understand the economic miracle of China today, it is essential to conduct a comprehensive and in-depth study of the real state of China’s economy before the mid-nineteenth century. This book is an anthology of scholarly works written in English over several decades by the highly influential Chinese economic historian, LI Bozhong. The main goal is to break away from the previously prevalent Eurocentric historical perspective and adopt a fresh perspective in order to acknowledge the shifts in the economic history of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The selected papers are divided into two main categories: one consists of more general works, including keynote speeches and reports presented at major international historical conferences, and the other comprises specialized studies in economic history, particularly focusing on the economic history of Jiangnan during the Ming and Qing dynasties and comparative economic history between China and the West. This book aims to promote international exchange in Chinese economic history and enhance the international perspective of the younger generation of economic historians in China. It is suitable for scholars and graduate students in economics and history.
