SciOpen, an international digital publishing platform for scientific, technical, and medical (STM) journals developed by Tsinghua University Press, has recently reached a major milestone: it now hosts more than 200 journals. This achievement not only highlights its strong capacity to attract high-quality Chinese journals, but also reflects its growing success in enhancing the global visibility of local journals. SciOpen has also drawn interest from international recognized institutions such as the American Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) and Tech Science Press.
Launched in June 2022, SciOpen is committed to the mission of "Empowering Open and Trusted Research". It offers one-stop, customizable end-to-end digital publishing, global distribution and visualized knowledge services to support universities, research institutes, academic societies, and journal publishers in launching and developing their publications. It has rapidly become a benchmark platform in China, recognized for both its scale and quality in scientific journal publishing. To date, it has brought together 200 high-level academic journals and more than 60,000 articles spanning science, engineering, medicine, agriculture, and social sciences. It boasts over 6.8 million monthly page views, serving users across more than 190 countries and regions, with international visits accounting for over 50% of its traffic. In June 2024, SciOpen introduced AI-powered cross-lingual interpretation and Q&A features, accelerating access to research information and strengthening the global reach of Chinese academic journals.
Enhancing Publishing Standards and Efficiency via Full-Process Digitalization
SciOpen supports full-process digital production of journals (from submission-review to omni-media publication), and connects digitally with Renhe Structured Typesetting System and ScholarOne. It enables pre-publication of accepted papers within 1 day and whole-issue publication in 10 days (leading in China). It covers mainstream publishing models (pre-publication, online first, etc.) and new models (enhanced publication, data publication, etc.). Its incubated ETS-Data is China's first transportation data platform included in Clarivate's DCI; Hydrosphere is the first journal to explore "Open Peer Review" on SciOpen.
Boosting International Visibility via Multi-Dimensional Communication
Based on the international JATS standard, SciOpen ensures seamless integration with well-accepted indexing systems such as CrossRef, Web of Science, Scopus, CSCD, and DOAJ, allowing published papers to be quickly incorporated into academic databases. To maximize global reach, SciOpen has developed a comprehensive international marketing system that includes: targeted email campaigns, cross-journal article recommendations, partnerships with platforms like EurekAlert! and ResearchGate, and overseas promotion through social media channels (X, LinkedIn, Facebook) and strategic Google Ads campaigns.
Building Efficient Publishing Service Chain via Professional and International Operation
SciOpen currently hosts 200 journals from 80 publishing partners. Via SciOpen, Tsinghua University Press has established extensive cooperation with universities, academic associations, and research institutions, sharing supply/marketing chains and international expertise to promote integrated and scalable journal development. SciOpen has established standardized operation procedures covering management, technology, and implementation, along with a publishing system compliant with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). It also contributes to global academic governance through active participation in international publishing organizations.
Looking ahead, SciOpen will continue to optimize its platform by enhancing intelligent features, expanding the scale and quality of its journals, developing research support tools, and strengthening its supply chain and publishing ethics systems. It aims to facilitate collaborative journal development and serves as an efficient bridge for global academic exchange.
